Modern Romantics: How to Make Your Wedding Day Uniquely Yours (From a Wedding Photographer’s Perspective)

As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the joy of witnessing couples craft their wedding days in ways that truly reflect who they are—breaking away from traditional norms and embracing their own personal style. There's something deeply romantic about making your day uniquely yours, not just aesthetically but meaningfully. Here's how modern couples are weaving their personalities into the details of their special day, and how you can do the same.

1. Attire: Expressing Your Personal Style

One of the first areas where I see couples break from tradition is in their attire. Gone are the days when the white dress and black suit were the only options. Brides and grooms alike are choosing outfits that truly express their personalities.

From non-traditional colours to bold patterns, sequins, jumpsuits, or even vintage-inspired outfits, couples are making fashion choices that feel like “them.” And it's not just the bride and groom. Wedding parties are also embracing individuality, with bridesmaids and groomsmen wearing mismatched attire, reflecting their personal styles.

Tip: Don't be afraid to wear what makes you feel most confident and authentic. Whether it’s a colourful suit, a vintage gown, or even something as simple as a pair of your favourite shoes, every detail should make you feel like the best version of yourself.

2. Themes and Decor: Telling Your Story

The decor is no longer about simply being “Instagram-worthy” or aesthetically pleasing. Modern romantics are choosing themes that resonate with their personalities, shared interests, or the story of their relationship.

I’ve photographed weddings with decor inspired by everything from travel destinations the couple loves, to favourite books or films, or even personal mementoes that tell their love story. Whether it’s using heirloom family items, crafting handmade decorations, or incorporating meaningful symbols, these personal touches elevate the day beyond just being pretty.

Tip: Think about what’s important to you as a couple. Are there places, hobbies, or experiences that define your relationship? Incorporating these into your decor will not only make your wedding unique but also create an emotional connection for you and your guests.

3. Representing Shared Interests

I’ve seen couples use their table seating arrangements and designs as a way to reflect their shared interests, hobbies, or memories. For example, some have named their tables after cities they’ve visited together, while others have chosen themes like books, films, or even specific animals they love.

These thoughtful touches make the event more interactive and personal. They also spark conversations among guests who might not have known certain details about your relationship.

Tip: Take the opportunity to share a bit of your journey together with your guests. Whether it’s through table names, unique place settings, or personalised favours, it’s these details that turn the event into something truly memorable.

4. Tangible Memories: Polaroids and Instant Photography

One trend I’ve seen gain popularity is the use of Polaroid cameras or instant film throughout the day. In a world where digital photos dominate, there’s something undeniably charming about having tangible photographs taken on the day itself.

I’ve seen couples leave Polaroid cameras at tables or stations, encouraging guests to snap pictures and leave them in a guestbook with messages. The instant nature of these photos creates a fun, nostalgic vibe, while giving couples a set of physical memories they can take home right away.

Another trend is giving your partner sexy photos of you on Polaroids throughout the day. Building anticipation for the evening and getting some hilarious reactions.

Tip: Consider adding a Polaroid guestbook or an instant photo station to your day. It’s a great way to capture candid moments and provide your guests with an activity they’ll love.

5. Choosing Quirky, Fun Venues

Another way modern couples are personalising their weddings is by opting for quirky and unconventional venues. Think beyond the classic banquet hall or hotel ballroom. There are now weddings in art galleries, botanical gardens, historical libraries, and even on rooftops in the heart of the city.

These unique spaces not only add character to your wedding but often carry a personal connection to the couple, whether it’s a favourite place to visit or somewhere that aligns with their aesthetic.

Tip: When choosing your venue, think outside the box. What spaces reflect your style and the vibe you want for the day? It doesn’t have to be a traditional wedding venue—just somewhere that feels right for you.

6. Smaller, Intimate Receptions

Another trend I’ve noticed in recent years is the rise of smaller, more intimate wedding receptions. Many couples are choosing to focus on quality time with a smaller group of loved ones, creating a more meaningful and relaxed atmosphere.

This shift allows for more thoughtful details, personalised touches, and the chance to spend real time with every guest. The smaller guest list often enables couples to invest in special experiences—whether it's a gourmet meal, live music, or personalised favours.

Tip: If the idea of a massive wedding doesn’t feel like you, don’t be afraid to scale back. A smaller, more intimate gathering can be just as special, if not more so, because it gives you the freedom to focus on what matters most.

7. Friends and Family

Modern romantics often turn to the creativity and talents of friends and family when planning decor, food, and favors for special events like weddings, parties, or celebrations. This approach not only adds a deeply personal touch to the occasion but also fosters a sense of community and connection. Rather than relying solely on professional vendors, they embrace the charm of handmade or DIY elements, from home-cooked meals to hand-crafted decorations. This collaborative effort reflects a desire for authenticity and intimacy, where each detail tells a story and carries sentimental value, making the event more meaningful and memorable.

Tip: Consider which family or friends have a skill that could be used in your wedding day. Are they creative? To be brought on board for decor. Have they got an abundance of flowers in their garden? They could help with bouquets. Could they bake a cake?

As a photographer, it’s a privilege to capture couples expressing themselves in ways that break free from tradition and reflect who they truly are. These personal touches—whether big or small—create an event that’s not only visually beautiful but deeply meaningful.

Your wedding day is about celebrating your love story, and there’s no better way to do that than by making it truly, uniquely yours. So, forget what you “should” do, and instead, focus on what makes you and your partner feel most connected and comfortable. After all, the most memorable weddings are the ones that reflect the heart and soul of the couple.

Embrace the modern romantic in you, and craft a day that will be remembered for its authenticity, joy, and love.
